Algeria's accession, deposited 5 November 2025, took effect on 9 July 2026, bringing the Convention to 130 Contracting Parties. It is the first HCCH instrument Algeria has joined. Public documents exchanged between Algeria and other Convention states now need only an apostille rather than embassy or consular legalization.
Who it affects
Document holders sending U.S. or other foreign records to Algeria, and Algerian nationals using their documents abroad.
What changes in practice
- Algerian consulates no longer legalize documents from Convention countries.
- A state or federal apostille is sufficient for U.S. documents bound for Algeria.
- Algeria issues its own apostilles for outbound documents.
