How to Apostille Bank Letters, Bank Statements and Financial Documents

Bank letters and statements are private documents; they are apostilled through a notarized signature of a bank officer or a notarized copy. Residency visas with income or savings requirements, property purchases and foreign account openings are the common reasons.

Making bank documents apostillable

  • Bank reference letter — the officer signs on letterhead in front of a notary (most branches have one); the acknowledgment of the officer’s signature is apostilled.
  • Statements — banks will not notarize statements, but you can present printed statements to a notary for copy certification (where permitted) or sign a custodian affidavit that the attached statements are true copies.
  • Proof of funds / balance certification — same as reference letters.
  • Brokerage and retirement account letters — same route; some firms will not have officers sign before a notary, in which case the custodian affidavit method applies.

The state where the notary is commissioned issues the apostille.

Where they are required

  • Residency visas with financial tests — Spain (non-lucrative), Portugal (D7), Mexico (temporary residency), Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Italy (elective residency) commonly require apostilled bank letters or statements covering 6–12 months.
  • Property purchases — proof of origin of funds for anti-money-laundering checks by foreign notaries and banks.
  • Student visas — affidavits of support with bank letters.
  • Foreign account openings — authenticated reference letters.

Recency

Financial documents are almost always required within 30–90 days of filing. Obtain, notarize and apostille them close together.

Translation

Sworn translation after the apostille; consulates in Spanish-speaking countries routinely require translated statements.

Common reasons for rejection

  • Statements submitted without any notarization
  • Letter signed by an officer outside the notary's presence
  • Documents older than the consulate's window
  • Officer's title and bank not shown on the letter

Frequently asked questions

Will my bank notarize statements?

Rarely. Use copy certification by a notary (where allowed) or a custodian affidavit.

Do I need every page of the statement?

Attach the complete statement(s) the consulate lists; the apostille covers the notarized package as one document.

Can I apostille an online bank letter?

Only after a notary certifies the printed copy or an officer signs it before a notary.
