Colorado apostille

Fee $5 · Reviewed November 2026

Documents issued or notarized in Colorado are apostilled by the Authentications Program, Notary Program (Colorado Secretary of State). The office authenticates the signatures of Colorado public officials — registrars, court clerks, state agencies — and Colorado-commissioned notaries public, then attaches an apostille for Hague Convention countries or an authentication certificate for all others.

Since April 2, 2018 issues one combined certificate that works as an apostille in Hague countries and an authentication elsewhere.

How to get a Colorado apostille

  1. Confirm the document is a Colorado public document

Colorado-specific points

  • Credit and debit cards are not accepted for apostilles even though the state takes cards for most other filings.
  • Expedited $15 service is walk-in only and done while you wait (under an hour); mail cannot be expedited.
  • Office will pre-review a PDF of your document by email before you submit it.
  • Rejects 'proof of life' notarial certifications and warns that some notarized powers of attorney are unauthorized practice of law.
  • Mail goes through a state distribution center before reaching the office, adding transit time.

Federal documents and non-Hague destinations

Colorado does not apostille federal documents. An FBI background check, Certificate of Naturalization, DD-214, IRS letter or Social Security letter issued to a Colorado resident is authenticated by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. — see the federal section. For destinations outside the Hague Convention, the Colorado authentication certificate must then be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State and legalized at the destination's embassy (how the chain works).
